On 3 November 2026, the Latvian news portal LA.LV wrote about Foodhero. The story did not start with us. It started with a post on Threads.
One Bag, 11 Buns
A Threads user named Ginta wrote about buying a first ever Surprise Bag in the Foodhero app. Ginta opened the app just for fun, saw a bag at Gustava beķereja for only €3.90, and bought it. Inside were 11 sweet and savoury buns. The verdict, as LA.LV quoted it: very good value.
Readers in the comments replied too. Some said they would try the app soon. One had used similar apps in London and liked them. Another wished the app reached beyond Riga. We hear you, and we want more cafés and bakeries in other Latvian towns to join.
How a Surprise Bag Works
LA.LV explained it well. Foodhero connects people with cafés, bakeries, restaurants and shops that have good, unsold food left at the end of the day. The business packs that food into a Surprise Bag and sells it for less, so it is eaten instead of thrown away.
In the app you can see:
- offers near you,
- what kind of food to expect (bakery, meals, groceries),
- the price,
- the pickup time.
The exact contents stay a surprise. You won't know which buns or meals you'll get until you open the bag, and that's part of the fun.
Where You Can Find Us
Foodhero works in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Sweden. In Latvia our partners include GUSTAVbeķereja, Bagel&Co, SALA konditoreja, MIIT Coffee, Brīvdienu Pica and many more.
Why This Matters
LA.LV also reminded readers of the bigger picture. According to the UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024, about 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted worldwide in 2022:
- households: 631 million tonnes (about 60%),
- food service: 290 million tonnes,
- retail: 131 million tonnes.
Food loss and waste also cause about 8–10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We wrote more about these numbers in A Billion Meals Wasted Daily.
Every bag bought is food that is eaten, a business that gets something back for it, and less waste.
